Lao Music Awards Recap

Well now that the LMA 2011 is over, I guess I can rant :) .  I don't know if this year's LMA is better than the 2008 (can't compare since I didn't watch the 2008 except for the few clips on youtube).  I have mix feelings.  There are some positives and negatives.  I will state some of my observations below.

    • The show started off slow and on a shaky ground (malfunctioned mic and miscommunications) but got better as it progress.
    • The opening was nice, starting with traditional dance to "Dork Champa" (song sung by a guy (?) and later a female version by Alexandra) followed by the theme song by Bee
    • I think the hosts need more practice, at times looked like they have no clue what to do (forgot lines etc.)
    • Question some of their nominations and winners
    • I was disappointed that Dozo was not nominated for anything considering their success.  Though, I am not really surprised since they are not associated with any label.
    • Most of the winners are from Indee Records (again not really surprised).  I think artists from Indee has an advantage because of the company's business relationship with Lao Star Channel (yes, I do believe Lao Star Channel has an influence on the selection process).  Not saying that they don't deserve them, but just that they have better chance at winning than others.
    • I was disappointed with some of the performances especially the first half (not to many creativity, a lot of standing around lip-syncing).
    • The second half of the show was a lot better (some dance performances by MAZ, SuperOne, and  Xtreme, and very good "live" performances by artists from Modern Music and combo performances by Cells & Temple Guys).
    • Cells started where they left off at the 2008 LMA winning three trophies (Sack also won the Best Video for directing Tik's video)
    • There are some surprises for me, the most surprising being the "Best Female Pop Song" which goes to Mone Morning Girl; I was pretty sure that Tik was gonna win that.  But Tik probably doesn't mind since she won two awards (Best Female and Best Video Awards).
    • The "Best Male Pop Song" goes to Ton.  I like him, but it's kinda surprising though.  Even he was surprised.
    • I'm happy for Sam that he won the "Best R&B Artist" award but personally I think the other award "Best R&B Song" should go to Dozo for "Khao Jao" (not even nominated :( ).
    • The show is too long (4 hours ?).  I know they wanted to show some representation from each record company, but it is making the show too long.  I think they could have dropped some of the lip syncing performances.
    • I don't like the idea of "buying votes" (paying for votes through Tigo).  I don't think it is fair IMO (unbalanced representation, i.e. socialites over working class)
    • What else, I am really happy for Tar (Apacts) for the "Best Male Pop Artist" (he was very emotional)
    • Many artists were nicely dressed (May was adorable as always, sophisticated look from Annita)
    • Overall, I guess it is okay.
Might add more thoughts later after a re-watch.

Opening Performance by Sandra & Bee

You have many good points and I agree with them!

    My thoughts:

    • Too many winners from Indee Records (but they are popular)
    • Black Eyes deserved an award!!
    • Agree that Dozo needed to be in it!! (I was in love with Khao Jai)
    • Too many awards for cells -.-
    • Loved Maz, Super One, and Xtreme's performances
    • Tar's acceptance speech nearly had me tearing up. Very emotional!

That's all I can remember. Such a long ceremony,

    @ laopop4u,

Me too, I was hoping that Black Eyes could have won something.  Hopefully they, Dozo, & Temple Guys can win one in the future.  I almost cry during Tar's speech.  I can't believe I actually sat through the whole ceremony knowing that I will be late for my out of town appointment.

I agree with you, Dozo deserves at least an award but not even nominated, for some reasons, I think it's an independent band and it's not undered any company who supports.

About Dozo, can you tell me if they release
an album yet?  I have relatives who might go to Laos this summer and I
would love to have some CDs for souvenirs.

    I don't think they're going to
release an album soon cause they have no big budget to do so. One of Dozo
member told me, new single is going to released soon, actually an MV was
already produced by Au8ust but Dozo decided to postpone, they
    probably need to fix something.

About CDs, it's not easy to find
any new songs in CDs cause most of producers found it hard to gain the profit
from selling CDs, they turn the strategy to sell their music by cell phone downloading
in the form of ringtone and calling melody which give them more profit.

I’m sorry, I don’t have lots of updated
entertainment news in Laos at the moment, since I’m now in Australia, but I’ll
be back Laos in the next couple of months. I can help you with Lao entertainment news to update your
website. My brother’s shop (sevendayshop) supports some Lao celebrities. Have
some chat with me by this facebook

That explains why my cousin who just got back from Laos last month had a hard time finding new cds.  Thanks for the information.  Would love to visit Australia someday.
